Senior Spotlight: William Vanderslice
Meet this week’s Senior Spotlight William Vanderslice! He is a Graphic Design Major that specializes in Illustration.
He has derived inspiration from his early years as a painter who enjoys movies and their dynamic visuals as well as, runway fashion with expression and movement in fabrics. Today he creates playful characters and inviting settings to draw audiences into his world!
In his featured piece “Family Shopping” he brings to life a found family of characters inspired by a previous assignment creating characters with no descriptive words. This found family is full of spunky characters differing in background, colors, poses, and fashion however their cohesiveness and relationship is shown by the scene of them grocery shopping. Their carefully selected warm color palate expresses youthfulness and passion while his flexibility of tone can be shown in the dimmed background with grey blues. Family Shopping is a static example of William bringing characters off the page through his unique style.
During William’s time at WCU he has practiced many other segments of graphic design such as type facing, corporate design and storyboarding. Through all his experiences he has learned to be flexible and not get attached to initial ideas. He encourages others to be optimistic towards change in their projects to expand their creative reach.
Thank you, William for a look into your designs and good luck for the future!
